The Call For Sculptors

Design the first statue honoring women in Central Park

November 6th marks the Centennial anniversary of the 1917 New York State referendum that adopted Votes for Women. On November 6, 2017, The Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony Statue Fund released a combined Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and Request for Proposals (RFP) inviting professional sculptors to participate in a sculpture competition for a Woman Suffrage Movement Monument to be located in Central Park in New York City. The competition is open to all professional sculptors over the age of 18, residing in the United States. Please note that The Statue Fund must also receive approval from the New York City Public Design Commission.

If this would be of interest to you, the RFQ/RFP for the sculpture competition is now posted, along with answered questions. Please download here. We look forward to receiving your response.

Sculptors

Professional sculptors over the age of 18 who are interested in creating a figurative work and contemporary interpretation of the woman suffrage movement may submit their material now that our RFQ/RFP is released. Please download the RFQ/RFP for more details. After a rigorous evaluation process, our panel of judges will select and commission one artist and/or team to design and build the statue.

The winning submission will:

  • Create a tribute to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and other women who helped advance women’s voting rights and equal treatment under the law
  • Integrate the monument design within the existing Central Park landscape
  • Make reference in the artwork to others, besides Stanton and Anthony, who helped advance the cause of Woman Suffrage
  • Consider space for educational, contemplative, and commemorative events related to the statue and the history it reflects
  • Engage the public, enabling them to connect with the ideals that the statue represents
